Lead Data Engineer

The DMO department supports the whole of the Data-related activities of Sodexo BRS in Belgium (Benefits & Rewards) at a Belux level, in a 24/7 environment. This represents more than 100 internal users and over 500 external users. The DMO department is made up of 10 staff, working on a group of activities (Data Governance, ETL, Reporting, Data Architecture, etc.).

Our main objective is to enable the company to enter the digital age successfully by maintaining a highly resilient and effective tool. We also aim to guarantee a top-quality service for our users by offering innovative solutions.

Functie

As Data Engineer, your main role is to build and implement Data Solutions/Products. You will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the whole production chain, from the company’s datawarehouse over a hybrid infrastructure (on-premise / cloud) combining various different technologies (Rest API, Oracle/SQL/NoSQL databases, batches and files)

You will work in collaboration with the various sections of the IT and business line department as part of an Agile squad, in alignment with the Scrum Master and the product owner. You will ensure alignment and compliance with the data governance rules (including the quality of the data). You will also follow the recommendations of the IT and security architecture, as well as adhere to the GDPR.

You will document your work in accordance with the standards in place within the company. You will coach the members of the team from a technical point of view and help them get the best out of themselves for developing data products. You will also monitor and ensure the consistency of the technical solutions implemented. You will report to the Data Management Office Manager.

Responsabilities:

55% Participating in the definition and implementation of technical solutions relating to company data.

      • Technical analyses based on the user stories defined by the Product Owner at the level of data sources, mapping, transformation, destinations
      • Estimates/Grooming
      • Development of data flows to the datawarehouse
        • Extraction
        • Transformation
        • Loading
      • Development of data transformations for business intelligence and machine learning purposes
      • Development of self-service environments
      • Development of complex reports/dashboards for end-users
      • Functional and non-functional tests
        • Set-up of tests
        • Execution of tests
      • Guidance for end-user tests
      • Assisting the business line teams in analysing company data

10% Maintenance / Support

      • Regular monitoring of issues escalated by users
      • Monitoring of jobs to ensure the availability of data
      • Identifying problems and opportunities to make improvements in the development of the solution
      • Monitoring of needs in terms of updates to the software used

5% Actor in the Agile methodology:

      • Active participation in ceremonies
      • Regular exchanges with the product owner, squad master and the team
      • Use of Jira

10% Alignment and compliance with rules

      • Follow-up and support for the development of data governance rules (including the GDPR)
      • Monitoring of the implementation of solutions guaranteeing the good quality of data, in line with the requirements stated
      • Co-development and follow-up of recommendations of the business architecture
      • Compliance with constraints linked to data security

10% Documentation

      • Documentation in line with the company’s standards (diagram / comments in the codes / etc.)
      • Use of confluence

10% Technical coaching

      • Technical support for all of the data engineers
      • Ensuring the consistency of the solutions implemented (code review)
      • Onboarding of new members of the team

Profiel

Experience

    • Master’s degree in Computer Science or Data Engineering
    • At least 5 years’ experience in the world of ETL / ELT development
    • Advanced knowledge of data lakes and datawarehouses for analysis and operational requirements
    • Experience working transversally in an international company and as part of an agile organisation
    • Fluency in the national languages (French or Dutch) and good knowledge of technical English.

Hard skills

    • High level SQL: querying, procedures and basic administrative tasks
    • Knowledge of at least one of the following languages: C#, Python or Node.js
    • Knowledge of data modelling for analytical (OLAP) and operational (OLTP) requirements
    • Knowledge of ETL / ELT principles and the ability to operate at least one tool (by order of preference: Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Snowflake, IBM Datastage, Talend)
    • Experience with Azure cloud: azure storage, azure functions, azure key vault, api management, etc.
    • Good knowledge of Python applied to Machine Learning
    • Knowledge of the development cycle and CI/CD principles
    • Rest API OAuth, swaggers, backend services
    • Ideally: experience in the design and implementation of data processes in real-time or near real-time
    • Ideally: knowledge of distributed computing with Spark (databricks or Spark)
